About First Furlong

Making horse racing accessible to a new generation.

The Story

We live on our phones. Entertainment is a scroll away. So why would anyone bother going to the races?

Working at Brisbane Racing Club for the past year, I found my answer. There's something about live sport — the atmosphere, the anticipation, the roar when the field hits the straight — that a screen just can't replicate.

But I also noticed the crowd skewing older. Younger people aren't showing up, and honestly, racing hasn't made it easy for them to start. First Furlong is my attempt to change that — to make the sport accessible to a generation that's never had a reason to care.

The Mission

Horse racing is woven into Australian culture — from the Melbourne Cup that stops a nation to local community race days. But somewhere along the way, it became intimidating to newcomers. Form guides that read like another language. Jargon that assumes you already know.

First Furlong exists to bridge that gap. No betting tips. No promises of winners. Just clear, plain-English explanations that help you understand what's happening — so you can make your own choices with confidence.

Application Support at Brisbane Racing Club

BRC

I work in application support at Brisbane Racing Club, which means I get to see both sides of racing — the technology that runs it and the people who enjoy it.

First Furlong started as a learning project and grew into something I genuinely believe fills a gap. If you've ever felt like racing has too much jargon and not enough explanation, this is for you.

Acknowledgements

Thanks to the team at Brisbane Racing Club for taking the time to review First Furlong. Their feedback continues to shape the site into something genuinely useful for racing newcomers. If something works well here, there's a good chance they suggested it.
