As the unofficial curtain-raiser to the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, the Queensland Guineas showcases the very best three-year-olds in the country. Newcomers will love the electric atmosphere at Eagle Farm, the colour and pageantry of the mounting yard, and the excitement of watching top young horses stride out over a mile.

Feature: Queensland Guineas

Eagle Farm hosts the Group 2 Queensland Guineas, one of Queensland's most prestigious races for three-year-olds over 1600 metres run under set weights conditions. As the opening chapter of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, this meeting signals the shift from Sydney's autumn season to Queensland's exciting winter program. It's a brilliant opportunity to watch the next generation of racehorses compete at one of Australia's most iconic venues.

What to Watch For

  • The Queensland Guineas is a set weights race, meaning all runners carry the same weight — this levels the playing field and puts a premium on pure talent and racing ability rather than weight advantages.
  • Watch the Mounting Yard before each race: this is where jockeys receive final instructions from trainers and owners, and where you can see the horses up close before they head to the track.
  • Eagle Farm is steeped in Queensland racing history and is the spiritual home of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival — a beloved tradition in Queensland sport that draws competitors from across Australia and New Zealand.

First race: Check local guides10 races

Country racing at its finest — the Golden Mile Raceday combines top-level thoroughbred competition with the warmth and community spirit of a regional racing festival. With live music, free parking, and the excitement of racing on a brand new track surface, it's a wonderfully accessible and fun day out for newcomers.

Feature: Golden Mile & Bendigo Guineas

The Ladbrokes Golden Mile Raceday is one of Bendigo's two biggest race meetings of the year, with the $200,000 Listed Golden Mile (1600m handicap) as the feature alongside the Bendigo Guineas. This year's event is extra special — the meeting has been moved back from its usual April slot to 2 May following a major $1 million track upgrade at Bendigo Racecourse, meaning racegoers will experience a freshly resurfaced and improved course. The Golden Mile is Victoria's standalone feature race meeting on this day.

What to Watch For

  • A handicap race like the Golden Mile is fascinating to watch because horses carry different weights assigned by the stewards to theoretically give every runner an equal chance of winning — it's racing's version of a level playing field.
  • Look out for the jockeys' silk colours as the field rounds the final turn: the home straight at Bendigo is long and sweeping, offering spectacular viewing as the runners spread wide and battle to the line.
  • The Bendigo Racecourse has just completed its first major track resurfacing in 27 years — 60,000 square metres of new turf — meaning this Golden Mile Raceday debuts on a brand new surface, making it a genuinely historic occasion for local racing.
