Carnival Calendar
Australia's racing season peaks three times a year. Here's when the best horses race for the biggest prizes.
New to racing carnivals?
Carnivals are the sport's "season finals" — short windows when the best horses, biggest crowds, and highest prize money all converge. Spring (Oct–Nov) is the biggest, headlined by Melbourne Cup. Autumn (Mar–Apr) wraps up the racing year. Winter (May–Jun) is Queensland's time to shine. Group 1 races are the highest tier (like Grand Finals). Below that: Group 2, Group 3, and Listed races.
Spring Racing Carnival
October - November · VIC · NSW
The pinnacle of Australian racing. For two months, Melbourne hosts the world's best horses, biggest crowds, and most iconic race (Melbourne Cup stops the nation). This is when casual fans become racing fans.
The premier race for three-year-olds (like racing's under-21s). Winners often go on to Melbourne Cup glory. This is where champions announce themselves.
The world's richest turf race ($20 million!). Think of it as racing's Grand Final – 12 of the fastest horses on the planet sprint for glory. It's only 1200m (6 furlongs), so it's over in about 70 seconds.
Why is it worth $20 million? Slot holders (sponsors) pay for entry, making it the world's richest turf race. It's like buying a seat at poker's final table. Learn about prize money economics →
A marathon race (2400m = 12 furlongs) that previews the Melbourne Cup field. Winners here often go on to "stop the nation" two weeks later.
A 'staying test' means horses race over long distances (2400m = 12 furlongs). It's like comparing a 100m sprinter to a marathon runner – completely different skill sets. Understand race distances →
Widely regarded as Australasia's best race. Unlike handicaps (where weights are adjusted), this is a pure "best vs best" showdown – champions at their true weight. If horses had a hall of fame, Cox Plate winners would be first ballot. Note: temporarily at Flemington while Moonee Valley is redeveloped (2026).
The Cox Plate is a Weight-for-Age race – the ultimate test of class. See how it compares to Handicaps →
A $10 million race exclusively for four-year-olds (racing's "prime age" athletes). At 1500m, it's the sweet spot between sprinting and distance racing. Originally run at Rosehill Gardens (2019–2024), relocated to Randwick from 2025.
The race that literally stops Australia – public holiday in Victoria, offices pause nationwide. A 3200m (2 mile) marathon watched by millions. If you only know one horse race, it's this one. First Tuesday in November, since 1861.
Did you know? The Melbourne Cup is a Handicap race. Learn why weights matter →

Autumn Racing Carnival
March - April · NSW · VIC
Sydney's Autumn Carnival wraps up the racing season in style. The Golden Slipper (world's richest two-year-old race) headlines a social calendar that rivals Spring. Think: champagne, harbour views, and racing's future stars.
The world's richest race for two-year-olds (babies in racing terms – they're barely mature). This is where future superstars announce themselves. Winning here is like being named NBA Rookie of the Year and MVP in the same season.
Two-year-olds are racing's rookies – they're barely mature and still developing. Winners become household names by age four. It's like spotting the next big thing before they peak. Learn about horse age groups →
Sydney's premier handicap race for "milers" (horses that excel at 1600m, roughly a mile). Handicaps add weight to better horses to level the field – imagine the best runner carrying a backpack. This creates dramatic, unpredictable finishes.

The autumn equivalent of the Cox Plate – champions at equal weights, pure ability decides the winner. At 2000m (10 furlongs), it crowns the best middle-distance horse in Australia. Cox Plate winners often compete here too.
Winter Racing Carnival
BRCMay - June · QLD
Queensland's Winter Carnival is where Brisbane takes centre stage. While southern tracks are quiet, Eagle Farm hosts the Stradbroke Handicap and the state's most prestigious racing. Sunshine, sprint racing, and serious prize money.
The opening act of Brisbane's Winter Carnival. At 1200m (6 furlongs), this Group 1 sprint is where the nation's fastest horses kick off their Queensland campaigns. Named for the original £10,000 prize money — now worth millions more.
The middle jewel of Brisbane's Winter Carnival triple. At 2000m (10 furlongs), this Group 1 race bridges the gap between the Doomben 10,000's speed and the Stradbroke's tactical brilliance. A true test of class over a staying distance.
Queensland's biggest race and the jewel of Brisbane's Winter Carnival. At 1400m, it's a fast, furious sprint that attracts Australia's best horses north. Winners take home $3 million and cement their legacy.
Sprint races are decided by milliseconds. Barrier position (starting gate) can make or break a horse's chances. Learn to read barriers in form guides →

Queensland's premier marathon race (2400m, same as the Caulfield Cup). While the Stradbroke showcases speed, the Brisbane Cup tests stamina and staying power. A Group 2 race that's been run since 1865 – serious racing history.
