Racing Basics
Horse Ages: From Rookie to Champion
Understanding a racehorse's career from 2yo to retirement.
The Universal Birthday
In the Southern Hemisphere, all racehorses turn a year older on August 1st, regardless of when they were actually born.
- A horse born in September is "almost a year old" when it turns 2yo on August 1.
- A horse born in July would be "barely a month old" when it turns 2yo (which is why breeding is planned for Aug-Dec).
Analogy: Imagine if every school kid celebrated their birthday on Jan 1st - some would be naturally older and bigger than others in the same grade.

Why Age Races Exist
- Fair Competition: Racing a 2yo against a developed 5yo is like a high school team playing an NFL team. It wouldn't be safe or fair.
- Breeding Value: Winning "Classic" races as a 3yo massively increases a horse's value for breeding later. It proves they were precocious and talented early.
- Tradition: Major races like the Derby have been 3yo-only for over 150 years.
When Age Matters
Stamina:Young horses (2yo) physically cannot run 3200m. They build stamina over years.
Experience:Older horses handle big crowds and traffic better. They don't panic.
Recovery:Young horses can bounce back faster between races, but need long spells to grow.
